The importance of being earnest: Doing business, going organic

I’ve had a long holiday, no blogging, not much working but a lot of thinking and decision making. Business wise, 2011 was a great year for me, I got some wonderful stockists, great press and a load of really lovely customers (from this I have now deduced that my target market is “awesome, gorgeous, super nice people”) but as thoughts turned to 2012, a new collection and moving forward I knew something had to change.

Previously the most important aspect of my business as I could see it, was to produce things locally and make the most of local craftspeople. The quality of my products was/is paramount. My clothing is 100% natural and made under fair conditions, my screenprinting is done up the road from me by an absolute pro using waterbased inks and will wash a trillion times (ok I haven’t counted, but trust me it is A class) and for a time, I was very proud of what I was making. But, when they say ‘ignorance is bliss’, they aren’t lying. I was remaining ignorant to the actual reality of cotton production, the use of pesticides and the effect this has not only on the planet but the farmers, their families and their health. ’100% cotton’ is a phrase that has instant connotations of ‘natural’, ‘good for us’ and ‘quality’, when in reality it is anything but.

I’m not stupid, I know that organic cotton and alternatives are expensive, more difficult to obtain and limited in range for many peoples use. But as one person who is in charge of EVERY aspect of my company, working on a relatively small scale with the ability to produce and print my own products, why wouldn’t I take that extra step to improve my products?

Turns out, going down the organic route is proving to be a slow and difficult process but I won’t give up until I get what I want. My new designs will be made soon, and it is my absolute mission that they benefit absolutely everyone involved in their production. Don’t worry, I’m not going all earth-mother on you, they’ll still have the same edge and vibrancy.

I’m not writing this to preach, but to share what’s been buzzing around in my head this last month and let you know what’s coming. I’d really love to hear your thoughts, opinions and experiences on the subject.

Denim on denim

The weather is doing it’s indecisive thing before summer properly starts. It’s windy and sunny at the same time; the perfect conditions to attempt a bit of denim on denim. It’s an effortless casual look just keep it light on top and darker below, and no head-to-toe spray on denim.

The Season

Coming out from underneath my rock and acknowledging that December really is just around the corner has sped up the jewellery making production line. I now have plenty of rough crystal rings and necklaces ready to send as gifts or a bit of personal bling. New combinations are available and I’ll be adding more. If a particular piece is out of stock, I can make to order within a week in most cases.

Every piece comes carefully boxed and packaged for you to give as gift.

Plus, because paying for postage is such a downer when choosing to do your holiday shopping online and to thank you all for choosing to support independent business this season all postage on orders of $65nz and over is totally on me!

Here are the final postage dates for Christmas delivery according to NZ Post.
I am of course happy to post anywhere, any time but please realise that outside of these dates there is a chance your parcel may not arrive on time.

New Zealand: 20th December
Australia: 9th December
Rest of the world: 2nd December

Happy shopping!

A nod to black

I’m more than a bit colour obsessed (in case you hadn’t noticed) so thought it was time to acknowledge black in all it’s sophisticated beauty. I do love black, not so much the black tie, the LBD or business attire but black day and night wear that is edgy and just as cool (if not more so) than it’s colourful counterparts.

DIY: Glitter Boots

So, first I wanted THOSE glitter MiuMiu’s, then I got a bit more realistic and started lusting after the Topshop Ambush glitter boots however I was too slow, they’d already sold out and were up on ebay for double their original cost. I decided I wasn’t going to let a shopping failure stand between me and sparkly feet so I got creative.

1. Gather supplies.
• Shoes (I had these boots in the back of my closet, comfy and solid enough to be worth the effort but no longer seeing the light of day. I used leather shoes but I’m sure it would work just as well on non-leather shoes).
• PVA glue
• Masking tape
• Sand paper
• Cup or container for mixing
• Paint brush
• GLITTER (I ended up using almost 5 vials)
• Spray fixative

2. First mask off anything you don’t want glittered or worse, sanded. Then sand the shoe as best as you can. The better sand you manage, the better the glitter will hold. When you’ve finished sanding give the shoes a good wipe with a damp, clean cloth, then wipe dry.

3. Mix your glitter glue mixture. I used about 1/2 cup of straight PVA glue which turned out to be more than enough. Mix in 3 vials of glitter.

4. Using your paintbrush, fully cover the shoe with the glue mixture. (Remember that PVA glue goes on white but dries clear). You want to make sure you have good, even coverage but don’t load the glue on so thick it drips or might dry in lumps.

5. When both your shoes have been painted liberally shake as much glitter on to them as you can while the glue is still tacky. I used a vial of loose glitter on each boot. Again, aim for evenness.

6. When the glue has dried give them a tap and shake to get rid of any excess glitter. (Excess Glitter? Oxymoron surely?). Spray with your fixative (hairspray might even work here). Leave them over night and give them a couple of subsequent excess glitter shakes, and protecting sprays.

Remove the masking tape and wear them out!
Tip: avoid white carpets for the first couple of wears as you will be leaving little trails of fairy dust.

Panama-na

There is something about a good hat that instantly lends finish and personality to an outfit, no matter what it might be. I have a gorgeous friend who often wears hats, looks amazing and every time I leave her and her hat-wearing presence I’m left thinking about taking the plunge and becoming a hatter myself. And so, this summer, I will.

The classic straw Panama is almost fool-proof and so I’m declaring it my gateway hat. Panama-na!

Brilliant

Creating and working has always been a constantly evolving process for me which has lead in many different directions. My current obsession with colour, jewellery and over-accessorising has led me to this latest venture, expanding and refining my jewellery brand into it’s own, Brilliant.

Brilliant includes the currently available raw crystal rings as well as some exciting new designs. Including these luxe friendship bracelets which combine bold, bright stripes with stunning vintage glass gems. Each one is unique and handmade with care. While not at all illustrative, I strive that everything I create is a statement. Hope you like what you see. Available next week.
