Urban Geodes

1 Mar

A Common Name, an LA based graphic designer and artist has done a series of street art installations creating false geodes in an urban landscape. The geodes are actually made of paper (incredible) and I love how discreet they are. It’s all so, so pretty. A Common Name relates the project to a kind of treasure hunt, and I know I’d be chuffed to see one of these glinting at me from within a broken old wall.

As they’re paper they won’t last forever, but if you’re in LA, check out the map and see if you can find one. This is my kind of street art.

It was a lot cooler in my head…

Graphic Designer, Carolyn Sewell made and sent a hand-drawn type postcard to her parents everyday for a year.

“It was a lot cooler in my head” needs to be above my desk. But I also love all of these. Go to Carolyn’s site to see all 365. These were done during 2010, so I’m impressively slow on the catchup here. I’m always wowed with people that can stick at something for a year.

Modern threads

I’m constantly in awe of the work of sisterly duo Maricor/Maricar. Maricor/Maricar are graphic designers who take their hand-drawn type to the next level, using needle and thread to create it. Their embroidered pieces are graphic and modern, a far cry from a Victorian Sampler. As well as design work, they also offer a custom embroidered initial via their etsy shop.

Edgy

Moo has just brought out their new luxe cards, 600gsm stock with a river of coloured paper running right through the card. They’re not cheap, but they are gorgeous and an easy way to add an edge (sorry) to your existing design. With Moo, the colour options are limited to blue, red, black and white. For a truly custom result find yourself a letterpress studio that offers edge painting such as Dingbat Studio.
