A Dog Like That!

‘A Dog Like That!’ is a New Zealand children’s picture book illustrated by me, Evie Kemp, at the beginning of 2010. The book is authored by Janene Cooper and published by Duck Creek Press.

In February, 2011 ‘A Dog Like That!’ was announced as a picture book finalist in the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards. School children can vote for their favourite book here.

‘A Dog Like That!’ is a charming tale of how a girl is told dogs should be, her own scruffy pup is none of those things but to her, he is perfect. The book is suitable for children aged 2+ but is an ideal text for young readers as each page features ‘action’ words that encourage kids to read along.

As my first book illustration I chose to illustrate the book using paper cuts and collage. This was a deviation from my usual line drawings but the graphic imagery of each dog character lent itself so well to the medium. The illustrations are bright, fun and full of life.
